The amendments to the constitution provide some of the most important foundations to our political system providing much needed additions to the government. The most important is the first amendment which provides several essential rights to citizens in a democracy. It states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” These few words have played an integral part in legal developments in the history of the United States.
The first clause in the first amendment establishes the separation of church and state. It has two implications. First, Congress may not respect an establishment of religion. This was later clarified by the Supreme Court in Lemon v. Kurtzman now known as the Lemon test. It stated that:
1. “The government's action must have a legitimate secular purpose;
2. The government's action must not have the primary effect of either advancing or inhibiting religion; and
3. The government's action must not result in an "excessive entanglement" of the government and religion.”
The establishment clause thus prevents the government from becoming ruled by a specific religious group, or faction, as James Madison would have called it. This prevents a single religious group from dominating others. Such protection prevents government officials from giving benefits (such as tax breaks) to specific religions or establishing public policy based on religious texts. The second clause of the first amendment provides free exercise of religion. By limiting the authority of Congress, ….

God Damn it! Kara just got home from work and she made $76 in tips alone. Thats like $100 for one days work. Wow, that is frikin ridiculous.
She also got offered a job showing houses to people for $15 an hour.

So my schedule this year is really strange. I don't have a first period, and I have Independent Lit 2nd period at Valley. I have AP Calc 3rd period and 4th period off to get to Central. I have AP World History, AP Gov/AP Macroeconomics, AP Comparative Gov/AP Microeconomics at central. I don't have an 8th period either. Then I think I am going to have a Intro to Philosophy class at DMACC. The most time I spend at Valley any day is an hour and a half. That is really weird.

Lets see, what else...
I got a 4 on Physics and a 3 on Chem for my AP tests. Meh, its what I expected.
I picked up Molly from Iowa City which was awesome.

On the way back, just outside of Iowa City, we saw some smoke, and as we pulled up you could only see flames. The area within 20 feet of the car was on fire and smoke was billowing out of the wreakage. I couldn't even see the car, only part of the melting frame. There were police there but they were just standing around because they couldn't get close to the car. We passed a fire truck later. The car must have rolled over and exploded, and I don't think the driver or any passengers escaped. The ambulances were just waiting helplessly. It is the most horrifying thing I have ever seen. I still shiver when I think about it.....

Ok, so heres everything that is worth writing (and some thats not) about in the last couple days...

My computer has crashed. My sisters screwed it up. Its got a badgillion spyware programs on it. Explorer.exe won't load and for anyone who knows what that is, its the start button and icons and desktop stuff. In order to get on the internet, I have to press Ctr+Alt+Del and click new task, then type in "firefox.exe." Woo hoo. The good news is that now all the spyware programs don't load so it only takes about 3 seconds to get fully logged on. And it runs a lot faster than it did with explorer working. And as you saw above, I use firefox. (All people who don't care if they use shitty internet may skip this part)
Firefox, is the coolest thing ever. Most of you fools probably use Internet Explorer, and I will laugh. Because you use internet explorer, that is how you get a whole bunch of evil all consuming spyware programs. Firefox doesn't use ActiveX so it is immune. And it also has this pimp feature with tabs, so you can have multiple pages open in one window. And its just cool. So you should all download firefox. Now. And I am serious. And once you have, you should go to http://greasemonkey.mozdev.org/
It is the 2nd coolest thing ever, with Firefox being number one of course. Greasemonkey is a program that allows you to install scripts (fancy word for cool programs) that change how firefox reads webpages. You can do sweet stuff. For example, I use gmail for my email service (I'll get to gmail in a second), and gmail is free and has 2.3 gigs of space and counting. Yeah, its that cool. Well, anyway, its free but it has small content based ads on the side of the page. I installed a script to remove the ads so now I don't have ads :). I also installed a script to add a delete button so it takes 1 click, not 4 to get rid of spam. And my favorite is I have a script that saves emails I am writing every time I switch windows or select something outside of the compose mail box. Its an awesome autosave feature. There are scripts for all kinds of stuff, like I have a script so when you do a google image search, when you click a result it takes you to the page with the big picture instead of the one with the thumbnail and the original page. So you should all get Greasemonkey too!
And now on to gmail. You should all get gmail, because gmail is sweet. You need an invite, so anyone who wants to use gmail can just comment. I have 50 invites so I can give some away.

Now that you are all asleep, (but hopefully now have firefox), I will rant about some other stuff

So I decided I really like Tufts as a college choice. It has great programs in International Relations, Biology and Engineering, and majors in Economics, and Political Science.

Oh, and awesome news is my parents said they would support my decision for college even if it is Iowa State. Thats a good change.

I'm not in a very good mood. After school just kind of sucked. A lot. Oh well, i'll feel better in the morning, although that could be a really long time from now. eh, I should be able to get at least 6 hours of sleep.

Oh yeah, so Travis, Scott and I went out to lunch today because none of us had class and Travis told me that student government has $30,000 to do with as they please. Thats a lot of money. Oh, and I am very proud at the fact that Travis, yes I said Travis, is now pro-capitalism. The same person who was totally convinced that capitalism was evil now realizes its total awesomeness. What a glorious day.
